How to Create the Perfect Bedroom

How to Create the Perfect Bedroom

Your bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your home. It’s the place where you start and end your day, so it’s important to make sure it’s a space that’s functional, comfortable and relaxing.

Creating the perfect bedroom may seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually easier than you might think. In this blog post, we’ll give you some expert tips on how to create the perfect bedroom for you and your home. From beds and mattresses to storage and general styling, we’ll show you how to create a bedroom you’ll absolutely love spending time in.

Are you ready? Let’s get into it…

Where to begin when creating your bedroom

Trying to design your bedroom from scratch can be quite intimidating. But don't worry. If you need a place to get started, make yourself a mood board! Whether you're on Pinterest or flipping through catalogues, start collecting designs that make your heart flutter. You'll soon see certain trends popping up – colours, patterns, that sort of thing. By doing this you can easily start visualising how you want your room to look.

Now look at your room and what you've actually got to work with. Size? Lighting? Any features that'll need special attention when picking out furniture? All that stuff's important so take note of it. Once you've done all of this, just follow the rest of our guide below and watch those bedroom dreams become reality.

Choose the best colour for your space

Colour plays a major role in creating an atmosphere in your bedroom, so painting your room should be one of the first things you do before buying and moving all your furniture in.

Go for something light if you want to make your room look more spacious. If it's north-facing and a little chillier than usual, consider warmer colours or even dark hues. The goal here is to bring in plenty of natural light and create an atmosphere where you can relax and unwind instead of feeling overstimulated before bedtime.

The choices are plentiful, but don't go too bold – think muted shades over vibrant ones. It might surprise you, but grey is a very popular colour scheme for bedrooms. It’s calming, stylish and not to mention more exciting than your basic white. If you want something a bit more colourful, pink is another popular option. Plus there's all sorts of warm tones to choose from like plaster and terracotta, which are both on trend at the moment.

While paint is definitely the easier option, if you want to get a bit more creative, wallpapering and feature walls are also a fantastic option. Wallpaper will liven up any bedroom design. Whether it’s a soft pattern to add dimension or something a bit more wild if you're feeling bold – wallpaper is a great way to make a statement.

Plan the perfect layout

Figuring out the layout of your room is essential if you want to create the perfect haven. You might not have much wiggle room when it comes to space, but it’s still a good idea to plan the layout on some graph paper so you can see what you have to work with. And don’t forget to consider the direction the natural light is coming from.

A good place to start is the position of your bed, then organise all of your other furniture around it. If your room is rectangular, it’s best to position your bed lengthways. Bigger bedrooms allow for more creativity. If your room is large you might opt to position your bed in the centre. If your room is on the smaller side, putting your bed in the corner will give you maximum floor space and make the room feel more spacious.

The next thing to consider is how much space and budget you have for storage. Fitted bedroom furniture is definitely the best option if you want to maximise the space in your room. Especially if it’s small or awkwardly-shaped, like a loft bedroom. However, it can be quite expensive, formal looking and might like character.

Unfitted storage is the second option. This will allow you to get more creative with the pieces you choose. Unfitted storage doesn’t need to match, but ideally you want at least a couple of pieces in the same style to create a sense of unity, like a wardrobe and dressing table, for example.

Find the best bed

When it comes to picking the perfect bed, make sure you've got all your bases covered. If storage space is a priority, look into divan beds with built-in drawers or ottoman beds that lift up to reveal hidden compartments.

If floor space is limited, why not size down and get a double bed instead of king? Decor-wise, you'll be able to find exactly what you're looking for as there’s a plethora of styles to choose from. If you prefer a minimalist Scandi look, opt for a white-washed wooden frame. Or if you want something more luxurious, go with an upholstered headboard with pattern and colour.

Get a comfy mattress

Finding the best mattress for you and your room is one of the biggest decisions when designing your bedroom. It’s a major purchase that will impact the quality of your sleep for years to come. So, it's important to think about things like mattress size, materials and support before making your final decision. Depending on the size of your bedroom and your personal needs, you might opt for a coil spring mattress, an orthopaedic foam mattress or a pocket spring mattress. Whatever you decide, be sure to get yourself into a showroom first so you can try out all the different mattresses available.

Use layered bedding

Comfortable bedding is always a good way to brighten up a bedroom, and it doesn't require a large budget like updating the walls or furniture might. A well-matched bedspread also looks more intentional in terms of design and decor.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you're choosing a bedspread. First, think about the colours and patterns that will work best with your chosen decor and style. Then, consider the material. If you live in a warm climate, a light and airy cotton bedspread may be the best option. But if you tend to get cold at night, a cosy wool or flannel bedspread would be a better choice.

Don’t forget your pillows

There's no shortage of ways to style your bed with pillows. You can go for a simple, coordinated look or mix and match different colours, textures, and shapes to create a custom feel. When selecting pillows, keep in mind the size of your bed so that they complement the space without overwhelming it. You can also use pillows to create a focal point on the bed, such as a grouping of pillows in a unique shape or with a bold pattern. No matter what your style, adding pillows to your bed is a great way to add comfort and visual interest.

Get a well styled nightstand

Whether you need a place to set down your smartphone, alarm clock, or glass of water, a nightstand is a bedroom essential. The perfect nightstand will provide space for bedside storage and should also be the right height in comparison to your bed. The type of nightstand and the amount of storage space you opt for can depend on your needs and personal style. But when it comes to styling the surface, limit items to just a few bedroom essentials to avoid clutter.

Add extra seating

When you're choosing furniture for your bedroom, make sure to include a place to sit. This can be a bench at the end of your bed, a small sofa, or even a chair. This will give you a place to put your bags, take off your shoes, and just sit. If you don't have a lot of storage space, you can get a bench that opens up to reveal a large storage space underneath. This is a great place to keep extra pillows, blankets, and clothes.

Find some fabulous curtains

Curtains are an important part of your bedroom as they help with both the aesthetic and functional purposes. They add a level of comfort and warmth that other types of furnishings cannot. For light sleepers, blackout curtains will provide both privacy and shade from outdoor lights. When choosing curtains for your bedroom, you can select ones with a subtle texture that will filter in sunlight when you need an afternoon nap. Alternatively, you can choose a more vibrant approach and pick curtains that pull in colours from your pillows and other furnishings.

Invest in stylish storage

There is a wide variety of storage options available for bedrooms, depending on the size and layout of the room. Enclosed storage is a must in any bedroom, whether it is in the form of a dressing table, a wardrobe, or both. A wardrobe will provide ample space for all of your belongings, as well as adding to the visual appeal of the room. If you are short on space, a wardrobe with sliding doors will be a more efficient option, as it will take up less space and be easier to operate. Other storage options for a bedroom include clothing racks, wall shelves, wall hooks, baskets, and bed boxes. The space under the bed can also be utilised for storage in order to keep the floor clear.

Lamps and lighting

When you're designing your bedroom, it's definitely important to think about natural light. But in reality – we spend way more time in our bedrooms when it's dark. So making sure you've got the right kind of lighting up is key to creating a cosy space (and also making sure you don't trip over stuff when you go to get some water at night).

Consider dimmable bedside lamps or wall lights, or maybe even going for something extra fancy with a fairy light headboard. Depending on the height of your ceiling, you might be able to swing a beautiful chandelier or an over-sized lampshade. And if your wardrobe has integrated lighting, then chances are you don't need quite as much light from the ceiling. Bottom line – get creative and have some fun with it!

Flooring and rugs

When it comes to picking out bedroom flooring, comfort and warmth are key. Carpet usually ends up being the go-to choice for most bedrooms, but you might want to try solid wood if that's an option – it still feels nice underfoot and can look great if you throw down a rug. Solid wood can be expensive, though, so if budgets are tight, why not opt for engineered wood or laminate flooring? And if you don't feel like completely redoing everything, just get yourself a nice new rug – much easier on the wallet and no less effective.

Add your own personal touch

Whether your bedroom is large or small, a few personal touches can make all the difference. One way to do it is by accessorising. Don't be afraid to mix and match colours, textures, and styles. A quality rug can really change the look of your room; layer on some comfy throws and cushions and you've instantly achieved maximal cosiness. Put up a gallery wall for more colours and create a photo corner with pictures and plants for more homeyness. Sheepskin, cotton, and satin accessories are great for a luxe feel.
